I am a freelance artist, writer and teacher based in Stockport, Cheshire. I work in textiles and mixed media. Felt-making, dyeing and stitching are the big cornerstones in my work.
I have always loved to create and as a child spent many hours drawing plants and flowers in my parents' garden. I continued with my passion for the arts and gained art and textiles qualifactions.
After a brief period working as a design assistant in the fashion industry, I qualified as a teacher and I went on to teach textiles, fashion and general art & design courses in both further and adult education.
In addition, to teaching examination courses, I have delivered arts & crafts workshops in the local community for children young people, adults and healthcare professionals.
For my community teaching I write all my own learning resources, which is helped by the writing skills I have gained as a published author of craft tutorials and projects. My learning resources usually take the form of a booklet detailing a photograph of the finished project, a list of the materials needed, a series of step-by-step instructions of how to complete the task; and one or two suggestions of how the activity can be developed further. Learning by doing is what really motivates my teaching practice.
I am currently teaching an adult education course in 'Creative Stitch & Textiles Art' at Aquinas College, Stockport. In addition to this, I am a visiting tutor for the Lorna Knight Sewing Academy in Staffordshire, delivering workshops in free-machine embroidery to adult students of all abilities.
I am also a demonstrator for Abakhan Fabrics store in Manchester. I really enjoy getting to meet the public, share my passion for textiles with them and get to see what projects they are working on.
