Ian Moss-in his working life he taught Physics- is tutor to a course on canals in the Autumn Term and a course on Railways in the Spring Term. (courses illustrated by many colour slides). His interest in canals originated in 1940 when, for six years he lived by the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. The pleasure was repeated in 1963-70 when he lived by the Trent & Mersey Canal- both residences had commercial canal traffic-now almost gone- passing his front door. Canal interest led to Railway interest and the study of both has occupied much of his retirement years: he was President of the Railway & Canal Historical Society for a term- 1996-8. He is also President of the Stanier 8F Locomotive Society- founded by two ex-pupils in 1968: the locomotive is on the Severn Valley Railway, the pupils are retired!
Ian is particularly pleased that his second son Patrick shares his interest – part of Patrick's income comes from advising on canal restoration projects - and he is now the leader of the twice yearly visits to canals that Ian organises for the Guild.
