An English Radical Tradition? Wednesdays 19.30 2018/19

The concept of there being a strong tradition of dissent to the ruling order within English society is an idea that has sustained both left and right wing politicians in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. Given that the contemporary zeitgeist has appeared to turn against moderation and consensus, it seems an opportune moment to explore how far challenging the establishment is hard-wired into an 'English' psyche. We will examine 10 key movements in English history to see if any patterns emerge, or whether such a notion of radicalism is largely a self-sustaining myth. Amongst other issues we will look at Magna Carta, John Wyclif and the Lollards, the Levellers, Thomas Paine and Mary Wollstonecraft, Peterloo, the Tolpuddle Martyrs and the Chartists.
