Dante's Divine Comedy: An Introduction Mondays 13.30 2017/18

"You were not meant to live like brute beasts but to pursue virtue and knowledge" (Dante, Inferno)
Dante raises questions posed in classical literature: "What is the order of the universe?" and "What should life be?" HIs poem, translated and referenced across continents, continues to be hugely influential in literature. Why is this so? How can a medieval text be relevant to the world today?  We welcome taking up the challenges of this great work. Our text will be the penguin Classic Edition, translated by Robin Kirkpatrick.
