How ?Machiavellian? was Machiavelli? Saturday 26 January 2019

Does Machiavelli get a bad press? The dictionary defines 'Machiavellian' as describing an unscrupulous schemer. But how apt a description is that of the fifteenth century Florentine writer, Niccolo Machiavelli?

We will put Machiavelli in historical context, examine his relationship with the Medicis and Borgias of his day, and assess the impact of his most famous book The Prince, as well as some of his other literary works.

In this day school, we will also consider Machiavelli's influence on people as diverse as William Shakespeare and Richard Nixon.
