* Composers In Time awaiting day/time 2019/20

A roller-coaster ride through genres, eras and continents, Composers In Time will give a historical and political context to the work of a wide range of composers and songwriters and explore how they reacted to, and interpreted, the world around them. While the variety and scope of the course is considerable, with (hopefully) a surprise around every corner, it is organised into ten overall themes, as follows:

WEEK 1 A Message in Their Music: Classical music icons make a statement.

WEEK 2 Mirror To War: composers respond to two world wars.

WEEK 3 Against The Odds: The struggle to be heard in a hostile world.

WEEK 4 Did They Have News for You: Satire and parody from the musical masters of wit.

WEEK 5 The Battle for freedom: Musical Insurrection in Europe, Africa and Latin America.

WEEK 6 The African-American Experience: Jazz, blues, soul and rap

WEEK 7 My Town: Composers critique their immediate environment.

WEEK 8 Protest Music: 60 years of campaigning in the USA.

WEEK 9 The Swinging Sixties: Changing times across the musical spectrum.

WEEK 10 Contemporary Concerns: Today's composers have their say.

No prior knowledge of music history is required – just curiosity and an open mind. The aim is to make each session educational and enjoyable. The course will be fully illustrated using video clips.
