This beginner's course offers a friendly and understanding introduction to using computers and the Internet for home and work use. If you have ever felt daunted or confused by computers, you are not alone.
This is totally normal, especially if you didn't have the benefit of using them growing up! The course aims to teach you the foundational ideas and skills many people take for granted, in a supportive and informal environment. No previous experience is assumed, and help is always available for anyone who gets stuck - nobody will be left to battle on alone.
You'll learn common techniques and terminology used in computing, and then practice these techniques on desktop computers at Wilmslow High School. Most of these ideas, especially concerning the Web, are just as useful when applied to tablets or smartphones! At the end of the course you'll be able to get more out of your computer and use it with confidence. If you enjoyed the course and would like to know more, a follow-up course will be available to build on your skills.
Topics covered will include:
How to open, close, and swap between different programs
Files and folders, and how to organise them
Customising your computer to make it easy and convenient to use
Web browsers, their basic features, and how to navigate the Web
Using the Web to perform daily tasks with ease
Keeping your information safe online, and spotting scams and other pitfalls
Sharing photos and documents using online services or USB storage devices
