Creative Stitch: Contemporary Textiles Fridays 10.00 2017/18

This course is for all abilities. It is aimed at those students who wish to explore both hand and machine stitch with an emphasis on using non-traditional materials such as heat-sensitive fabrics, papers, metals and plastic.Throughout the course, students will manipulate materials using a range of techniques to include; dye, print, spray, marble, felt, cut, fold, burn, weave and embellish. It is hoped students will learn not to accept a material at face value, and that it can in fact be altered to give an interesting background for stitch.
A mixture of set exercises and self-initiated projects will enable each student to create a small collection of two- and three-dimensional contemporary textile pieces. Under the guidance of the tutor, students are encouraged to identify a topic as a source of inspiration for textile design, for example natural forms, architecture, paintings etc. Students will then go on to use rough sketches and sampling to explore their ideas further, giving consideration to the basic principles of design: line, shape, colour, pattern and texture. The final aim is to develop an original contemporary textile piece(s) for a specified end-use and students are guided as to how to evaluate finished work to describe strengths and any adjustments needed for future pieces.
The tutor will outline safe practices for using materials, tools and equipment. Students are encouraged to bring their own sewing machine where possible.
You do not need any drawing ability for the class. All that is needed is imagination and enthusiasm!
The ability to use a sewing machine at a basic level is desirable, but hand sewing is also a feature of the course.
A Facebook Page (Contemporary Textiles@Wilmslow Guild) is a showcase of stitch samples, design development and finished pieces by Guild students. Access via the link below:
