Life on Earth began 3 billion years ago with marine blue-green algae. Evolution continued in the oceans, with animals and plants spreading onto the land around 400 million years ago, and eventually humans appeared. We shall investigate how the Earth's evolving atmosphere, oceans and geology contributed to the explosion of life in the Cambrian and the mass extinction of 95% of all species at the end of the Permian period. How do we know all this? It is in the fossil record which we shall explore by studying rock and fossil specimens and geological maps to build up a picture of past environments and the evolution of life.
