Life on Earth emerged about 3 billion years ago with marine algae which evolved into more complex animals and plants, first in the sea and then on land and in the air until, eventually, humans appeared.
We shall investigate how the Earth's evolving atmosphere, oceans and geology contributed to the explosion of life in the Cambrian Period and the mass extinction of 95% of all species at the end of the Permian. How do we know these events happened? It is in the fossil record which we shall explore by studying rock and fossil specimens to build up a picture of past environments and their effect on evolution.
