Essayists and Diarists : Chroniclers of their Times Mondays 13.30 2017/18

'The essay', said Aldous Huxley, ' is a literary device for saying almost everything about almost anything.' From Francis Bacon to Samuel Johnson, Graham Greene to Christopher Hitchens, essayists have provided us with a cornucopia of ideas, thoughts and commentaries which reflect their times . Using 'The Oxford Book of Essays' (ed. John Gross) as our primary source we will examine together both the wide range of views and the language style in which they are expressed.
