Computers, Genealogy, and the Internet Tuesdays 13.30 2017/18

Researching your family history on the internet can be an exciting, yet daunting, task. There is a seemingly infinite array of websites to choose from to track down your ancestors, but  which are the best, and how can we get the most out of them?  How can we safely network with other researchers using the world wide web? How do we record our findings, either on the web, or directly onto our computer?

This course will give you a solid grounding in all aspects of internet based family history research, and will cover, for example:

- How to choose the best websites for your own research - learning how to assess a website

- Locating free online sources of information

- Networking safely and effectively online

- The ethics of using the internet for research

- Effective use of search engines - avoiding the pitfalls, and tips to get the most out of your searches

- Tackling your research "brick walls" using online sources

- Learn how to put your ancestors in the context of their times using online history resources

- Recording the results of your research, either online or directly onto your computer

Each week you will have a straighforward worksheet which will introduce to you some excellent websites and search engines - some of which are not widely known - which will build up into a valuable portfolio of  websites and tips. You will be fully supported by Gill, the tutor, who is a highly experienced internet researcher and historian, and further technical back-up is available as necessary. At no point will you be left to struggle alone.

This unique course gives you the opportunity to bring along your own device - laptop, tablet, iPad or similar - and work with your own equipment to get the most from it, and from your research.  The confidence you will gain from using your own equipment will get you off to a flying start with your internet research!

You are cordially invited to a one hour free technological set-up session the week before the start of the course on Tuesday 12 September 1.30pm and to ask any questions you may have, prior to the start of the course the following week.

Points to note:

- You will need to bring along a device with a screen large enough to enable you to work comfortably on the internet for two hours (with appropriate breaks). The device will of course need to have the capacity to connect to the internet via the Guild wifi. Please ensure your device is fully charged before you come along.

- Skills level expected: this course is suitable for any family historian at any level of achievement, from beginner to advanced. There is something here for everyone!
