Shining some light on the dark continent: a History of Africa Wednesdays 19.30 2017/18

Africa has often been reduced to a marginal role in the narrative of human history or seen as being a passive victim of external powers. This course will attempt to transcend these stereotypes and grapple with the immense diversity of a territory that stretches from the Cape of Good Hope to the southern shores of the Meditteranean, and will explore the distinctive cultures that have flourished across the continent through time. We will also examine the way that "African History" has evolved and explore the key topics from the domestication of sorghum to the lost merchant cities of Benin.
