In 1095 Pope Urban II called for a crusade to recapture the Holy Land from Muslim rule. The First Crusade succeeed in capturing Jerusalem in 1099 but holding onto the territory would be more difficult, and further crusafes were called throughout the 12th and 13th centuries. This course examines the events of this period and the religious stance of the protagonists. It looks at major figures from both sides such as Richard the Lionheart and Saladin. What was the impact on both east and west of the Crusades and what lessons can be learned?
