It is not easy to get into the mindset of people from the past and we tend to judge societies from our own modern context. This short course aims to try to get beneath the skin of the medieval man and woman. What did they believe and how did this affect their actions? Every aspect of their lives was pervaded by the authority of the Church but attitudes did not remain static. New movements arose and challenges such as the Black Death and the Renaissance would eventually lead to the end of the medieval world view. This course examines the five centuries from 1000-1500 and includes study of writings from this period.
