Manchester was the Shock City of the Industrial Age, where working people lived a new and difficult life. But how was Manchester governed and shaped by the new urban middle class? This course focuses upon the middle class elites of Manchester in the nineteenth century, and their cultural and political rise to power.

Questions will include:

Who were the middle classes? From where did they get their money and social status?

How did the middle classes finally achieve political power in the city in the 1830s?

The cultural lives of the middle classes – art, music and visual culture.

Where did they live, and why did they move from the city to the suburbs?

What was the role of charity in their social leadership?
