* Ugarit and th Bible Wednesday 10.00 2019/20

Ugarit was an inportant port on the Syrian coast in the Late Bronze Age. In 1929 texts written in cuneiform were unearthed written in the Canaanite language very similar to biblical Hebrew. They included religious texts about the gods such as El and Baal and the goddesses such as Asherah and Anat. Before the find the main source of information about Canaanite beliefs came from the Bible itself. Soon it became clear that the texts from Ugarit shed light on biblical stories and poetry to a remarkable degree. This course examines the archaeology of Ugarit and will include a reading of some of the texts and a comparison with material from the Hebrew Bible
